Behind the bottle

Vin Jaune Jura’s golden soul

It was a Friday, and spring was truly beginning to unfold its wings when we set out to do our weekly shopping. On the way back, we stopped by Edeka, because we love the bakery nearby, and while we were there, we decided to check out the wine selection as well. I chose a light summer wine from Sicily — but more on that later.

Into our basket also went a Vin Jaune from 2016. We didn’t really know what to expect, but looking back, I can say we definitely did not regret the purchase. If I remember correctly, we paid around 32 euros for it. After chilling it briefly at home, I excitedly opened the bottle, eager to taste this wine.

As soon as it poured into the glass, its golden, deep yellow color revealed that this was not going to be a light white wine. I particularly loved how the color of the wine perfectly matched the bottle design, creating a beautiful harmony.

Back to the wine! From the very first smell, the strong walnut aroma was unmistakable, overpowering hints of melon and curry. Upon the first sip — followed by many more — I experienced a very dry, bold wine. It was truly an experience wine: special and unique.

I found the young, raw walnut notes so fascinating that even days later, I still think back to it — and if I find it again, I will definitely buy it without hesitation.

According to the description, it pairs best with mushroom-based dishes or Comté cheese, but it also went beautifully with a freshly opened Président Camembert, especially thanks to the pronounced walnut character.

It was a wonderful experience, thank you!
